New Michigan head coach Brady Hoke will not let his team get out of hand on or off the field.
According to WXYZ, Hoke will have senior wide receiver Darryl Stonum redshirt after being arrested for his second DUI this past summer. In addition to this, Hoke also suspended sophomore punter Will Hagerup for four games and redshirt junior receiver Terrance Robinson for the season opener after violating team rules.
After Stonum was arrested for arrested this past summer, Hoke immediately said that the Texas native Stonum would be suspended from the program indefinitely and that having him redshirt was a possibility.
On Sunday that redshirt possibility for Stonum became a reality.
“While it would be great to have Darryl on the field this season, we feel it is in his best interest and the best interest of our program for him to redshirt,” Hoke said in a press release. “Darryl will continue to be an important part of our team and family. He has done everything we have asked him to do, but our number one priority is to help Darryl grow as a person.”
Stonum has 76 catches for 1,008 yards and six touchdowns at Michigan. He will be a fifth-year senior next season.
Hagerup is the only true punter on the Michigan roster this season. During the four games he will be absent Michigan will more than likely have to depend on freshman kicker Matt Wile or redshirt sophomores Seth Broekhuzien and Brendan Gibbons to pull double duty.
Terrance Robinson only appeared in nine games for the Wolverines but did have a chance to return punts this coming season.
“In order to build a championship-caliber culture, you have to be accountable to each other on and off the field,” Hoke said through the press release. “There are expectations at the University of Michigan you must live up to.”
