Freshman Austin Hatch made his first appearance for Michigan basketball during their 99-60 victory over the Perugia Select Team as part of their tour of Italy.

Hatch played in the final three minutes of the game which in and of itself would be a special moment for any incoming freshman. However Hatch isn’t your ordinary freshman. If you recall in 2003 Austin Hatch was involved in a plane crash that ended up killing his mother, brother and sister then was in another plane crash in 2011 which killed his father, stepmother and left him (Austin) seriously injured and in a medically induced coma for two months. Then after learning basically how to walk and talk again, Hatch moved to Los Angeles to live with his aunt and uncle only to return to play major college basketball three years later.

“It was a special moment,” said head coach John Beilein. “Austin even led us in the fight song after the game was over. It’s something he has worked very hard for. It was a great moment for our team; however, it was truly special for Austin and his grandfather, Jim, who was here in the stands.”

Simply put words really cannot describe Hatch’s return. His heart and resolve may be unmatched.
