University of Michigan forward and team captain Carl Hagelin has decided to sign a professional contract with the New York Rangers and will now play with the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League.

The Whale will begin Calder Cup play this Thursday when they take on Portland in Portland. Hagelin is expected to play with the Whale this week in their first round match-up.

Hagelin’s last game with Michigan was during this past weekends NCAA National Championship game in St. Paul, Minnesota when the Wolverines fell to Minnesota-Duluth 3-2 in OT. Hagelin led Michigan with 18 goals and 49 points. He was drafted in the 6th round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft (168th overall).
