Wednesday Eastern Michigan learned that Lake Orion native and Iowa backup quarterback Tyler Wiegers‘ intentions to play for the Eagles next season as a grad transfer.

“We are definitely excited about Tyler coming back to the great state of Michigan to join our program,” said EMU Head Coach Chris Creighton. “By being here this semester he will have the opportunity to get to know our team, learn our system and compete for the quarterback spot.  We cannot wait to get started.”

After spending four years with the Hawkeyes and graduating this past December with a degree in human physiology, Wiegers played in eight total games for Iowa while going 4-for-6 for 35 yards. This included a three-yard touchdown pass against the University of Illinois in October.

Weigers’ high school career was much more eye popping at Detroit Country Day when as a senior he threw for 2,093 yards and 24 touchdowns. In two seasons Weigers threw for 4,558 yards and 46 touchdowns earning him a four-star rating heading into college.

“I’m excited to join the program here at Eastern Michigan and look forward to the opportunity,” Wiegers added. “Coach Creighton is building something special and I cannot wait to make an impact. It’s great to be back home in Michigan, close to family, and have the chance to compete for playing time. I am very thankful and excited for the future.”
