Head coach Rob Murphy committed to EMU Basketball, not the NBA

on

Reports surfaced this past week that Eastern Michigan men’s basketball coach Rob Murphy would be taking an advanced scouting job with the NBA’s Orlando Magic. However Thursday according to AnnArbor.com, Murphy “reaffirmed his commitment” to the Eagles and will be on the sideline in 2012-2013.

Over the past year, Murphy’s coaching stock has risen after helping a usually bad Eagles team go 14-18 (9-7 in the MAC) and win the conference’s West division. In his first season he also took home MAC Coach of the Year honors.

This is obviously very good news for the Eagles considering the players and coaching staff won’t be in further limbo over the future of their head coach, especially since we’re only months away from the start of the season. Still this may hurt Eastern down the line in terms of recruiting since most high school players weigh their decisions heavily on the coach itself. If they don’t believe a coach is fully committed to the team and will be gone by the time their four years is up then they could look elsewhere for other opportunities.
