Thursday Michigan blew out Illinois 75-55 in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament which would have been impressive even without the plane crash they experienced less than 24 hours prior. Arriving in D.C. this morning for a Noon tip, the Wolverines without a doubt would have been excused if they turned in a less than stellar performance against a solid Fighting Illini team.

Obviously that was quite the contrary to the outcome of today’s game and it was John Beilein who may have been the least surprised at what happened on the court.

In his postgame interview, an emotional Michigan head coach said his team ‘just needed to go out and play basketball’.

Beilein also touched on the connection this current team has in relation to other team’s he’s coached over his 42 years on the bench. Via The Big Lead:

“Those 16 guys are as connected as any team I’ve had in 42 years,” he said. “They love each other and that was another time that we got to really love each other. They needed this, they needed to just go out and play basketball.”

Lets hope Michigan is able to rest easy tonight. Michigan will certainly be tested again tomorrow when they play Purdue at Noon.
