It was a history making day at Ford Field Sunday afternoon. Kicker Jason Hanson broke the NFL record for appearances on one team and the Lions set a franchise record for points in a game by defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 48-3.
After surviving what shouldn’t have been a close game last week against the Buccaneers, the score very much reflected how the Lions played today. Lions QB Matthew Stafford looked very much like a first overall pick from a few seasons ago completing 23 of 39 passes for 294 yards and four touchdowns while the defense was able to come up with six Kansas City turnovers.
Stafford was able to hit Calvin Johnson on 1 and 15 yard touchdown passes, TE Tony Schefler on a 36 yard touchdown pass and Jahvid Best on a 9 yard touchdown pass.
Best also ran for a 1 yard touchdown and 57 total yards on the ground.
In the first quarter it looked as though Kansas City might make a game out of it after being able to run the ball. However star running back Jamaal Charles left the game on a cart and didn’t return. It was later revealed that he tore his ACL and would be out for the season. Another devastating loss for the Chiefs who also lost star safety Eric Berry for the season as well.
Meanwhile an area that was supposed to be a weakness for the Lions this season, the secondary, looked very sharp. Eric Wright, Chris Houston and Amari Spievey all had interceptions while Wright was also able to force a fumble in the fourth quarter that Cliff Avril recovered.
Next weekend, the Lions head to north to Minnesota to take on the Vikings, a place where they’ve had trouble winning in the past. They will also try for their first 3-0 season since 1980.
