The Mid American Conference has suspended two of the three referees who officiated the Eastern Michigan and Ball State game Saturday afternoon. The suspension is reportedly for two games and removes their eligibility from working any MAC tournament games.

The suspensions were handed down after Ball State’s Francis Kiapway missed a three-point shot with 17 seconds remaining in double overtime and Eastern Michigan holding onto an 87-85 lead. After the miss EMU’s Ethan Alvano came down with the rebound before getting fouled a number of times without a call being made. Eventually, during the same sequence Ball State’s Ryan Weber ripped the ball out of Alvano’s hands, proceeded to travel (which was not called) and dish the ball back out to Kiapway who buried the three resulting in a 88-87 win for BSU.

Eastern Michigan head coach Rob Murphy called the final sequence the worst non call in his 20 years of coaching (via the Detroit News and Eastern Echo):

“It was terrible,” EMU coach Rob Murphy told the Eastern Echo. “All three officials watched us get the rebound and consistently get fouled. … The officials watched them travel, and they watched them shoot a three.”

Murphy added: “You don’t blame the game on officials. But in my 20 years of coaching, that’s the worst ignored call or sequence I’ve ever seen. Those guys did a bad job throughout the game, but in particular on that play.”

MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher also explained the suspensions:

“The final play of the game was not handled appropriately by several officials and unfortunately took away from what was a highly competitive and entertaining game for the competing students and fans,” MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said. “I along with our membership have higher expectations and as a result have directed our coordinator of men’s basketball officials to take appropriate disciplinary action, including multiple-game suspensions.”

The three officials responsible for the gam were Todd Williams, John Gaston and Robert Kruger. However the MAC declined to say which two were the one’s actually suspended.
