Over this past weekend Michigan secured their 21st verbal commitment when 6-foot-6, 270-pound defensive end Chris Wormley of Toledo, OH decided to attend Michigan in 2012.

This is not only that 21st commitment but another huge addition to Brady Hoke’s 2012 class as Rivals.com ranks Wormley a three-star recruit and the 22nd best player in the nation at his position. Scout.com ranks him a four-star recruit and the 20th best player at his position.

What may be more intriguing about this commitment though is the fact that Wormley at one point had Ohio State at the top of his list along with Michigan. In other years Ohio State may have very well of snagged a top recruit like Wormley from Michigan. However with all the trouble that Ohio State has been going through this past off-season, Big Ten teams, especially Michigan have been benefiting from Ohio State’s shortcomings.

Ryan Autullo of the Toledo Blade may share the same sentiments…

Although a lifelong Michigan fan, the Wolverines were not always necessarily the frontrunner to land Wormley. It was believed UM and Ohio State were neck-and-neck at one point, with Notre Dame and Michigan State trying to play spoiler. But with a NCAA investigation at OSU already having caused former coach Jim Tressel to lose his job and threatening to inflict more damage, Wormley moved Michigan to the top of his list.

Wormley’s commitment to Michigan may also be another indication that even though the NCAA indicated they wouldn’t cite OSU for failure to monitor they are nowhere near being clear of all their troubles.
