Michigan Hockey to remain a part of the Great Lakes Invitational

It was recently announced by Michigan Tech and Olympia Entertainment that the Great Lakes Invitational hockey tournament has been extended through the 2014 season making way for the 50th anniversary of the event. In addition to this, Michigan Hockey also plans to continue to be part of the event which also features Michigan State, Michigan Tech and one wild card invite.

“The Great Lakes Invitational tournament has become a long-standing tradition with our program and other schools in the state,” Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon said in a statement. “We are pleased that this annual holiday tournament will continue for the foreseeable future.”

The 2012 GLI will be held outdoors at Comerica Park during the “Hockeytown Winter Festival” which will also feature the NHL’s “Winter Classic” scheduled to be held at the Big House right here in Ann Arbor.

In 2013 and 2014 the event will be moved back to the Joe Louis Arena.

Michigan itself has done extremely well in the GLI tournament having recently won back-to-back championships as well as four titles in the last five seasons. The Wolverines have a total of 15 GLI championships which is more than any other participating school.
