No Heart? No. 4 Michigan upset by hapless Penn State

Michigan continued their very questionable play Wednesday as the Wolverines were stunned by a Nittany Lions team who beat the No. 4 team in the land 84-78 from the Bryce Jordan Center. In fact not only was this Penn State’s first B1G win this season, it was also their first win over a major opponent since 20o1.

Offensively for Michigan things were pretty standard. Tim Hardaway Jr. led the way with 19 points while sophomore Trey Burke had 18 points while dishing out 6 assists.

It was the defense that continues to be a problem for the Wolverines.

After having a 15-point lead in the second half, Michigan simply collapsed down the stretch against an inferior Penn State team. Jermaine Marshall, Penn State’s leading scorer arguably had the best game of his career scoring 25 points which included six three’s and a critical layup late in the second. Furthermore xix of the seven players Penn State put on the floor scored at least seven points, with three starters hitting double figures.

“It came down to heart, really,” Michigan’s Trey Burke said. “It came down to toughness, and we didn’t play with that the last four or five minutes.

“There were a couple times they got to the rim, we could have taken a charge, but we didn’t. They got to the rim, they hit 3’s and we didn’t respond.”

Unfortunately Michigan may have outdone themselves in terms of embarrassing loses this season. After falling to arch-rival Michigan State by 23 points earlier in the month, the Wolverines had a close call against the Nittany Lions a few weeks ago at Crisler only to fall to Penn State this time around. Not to mention Michigan’s disappointing play couldn’t come at a worse time as the Big Ten Tournament as well as the NCAA Tournament is just right around the corner.

“To win games at this level, you have to have an awful lot of courage down the stretch, we looked very tentative,” Michigan coach John Beilein said. “We just did not play the level of defense we’ve played many times before, and that gets you.”
