Michigan State emerged as the top team in the latest AP rankings released Monday securing the No. 1 spot after Villanova‘s 101-93 loss to Butler on Saturday. The Spartans‘ ascension to the top spot also comes after their own 108-52 win over Savanah State Sunday afternoon.

Michigan State sits at 14-1 on the season winning their last 13 while rattling off wins against North Carolina and Notre Dame. That one loss came against Duke which has caused a bit of early season controversy from CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish who believes the Blue Devils perhaps should have reclaimed that No. 1 spot in this week’s rankings.

The Spartans also capitalized off Arizona State losing their perfect record in a 84-74 loss to Arizona Saturday.

Next up for Michigan State is B1G counterpart Maryland.
