Since the Tigers 2008 first round draft pick busted on to the scene in ’09, Perry’s career has scene glimpses of promise, and all the makings of a nightmare.
Perry’s rookie year was OK, a season in which Ryan stockpiled 60 K’s in 61.2 innings. His era was mediocre for a late inning reliever, at 3.79. But great for a 22 year old. (Insert glimpes of promise)
2010 was supposed to be Ryan’s “Break out year”, that never happened. In fact, his numbers were almost identical to his rookie campaign. His era got better, and the walks went down heavily (38 to 23).But his strikeouts went down by 15! I think some of the problem with Perry is his rep. He has been so highly touted that everyone expects him to put up massive numbers, but we just haven’t seen that.
Then there comes 2011. A whole new year and a whole new Ryan Perry (well not really). Ryan was counted on to be a mainstay in the pen, but obviously that did not go as planned. Perry through up a 5.35 era, in the process, was sent down to Toledo 3 times. The one stat that makes me wanna puke is the base on balls. You really wanna know what it is? Really? Well, it sure isn’t pretty. Perry walked 21 batters. LOL right? But seriously its not funny, 21 walks in 37 innings is no where near acceptable, unless your Amazing Al. (Insert the makings of nightmare)
So the question is, should the Tigers give up on the young right-hander? It may seem like he is a 30 old wash-up, but he is still only 24 years old. The Tigers “next closer” has not impressed me whatsoever and appears (at least to me) like he is getting worse every year. He has seen Jim Leyland’s trust him in free fall and his era skyrocket. So, What’s next? What’s next?
